2007 Winner of the Most Unusual Memorial Competition

One for the Road!

Patrick Aivazian wins first place in the 2007 MAB Most Unusual Memorial competition

The Memorial Awareness Board (MAB) announced that Memorial Mason Patrick Aivazian, from Henry Wilson Memorial Masons in Uxbridge took home first place in their annual competition for the MAB Most Unusual Memorial Competition.

The competition, which was judged by members of the public, seeks to find the most original memorial in the UK as the demand for individuality is ever increasing. It aims to raise awareness of the craftsmanship and creativity of memorial masonry and highlight the wide variety of different memorial designs available.

MUMC Winning EntryThis year MAB was highly impressed by the standard and diversity of entries received. The unique, modern and humorous status of this memorial is achieved through only the most subtle deviation from tradition form and material: just the addition of a bulge to the sides, a subtle convex curve to the facade and the use of two contrasting coloured granites all make this memorial strikingly different, personal and humorous in the simplest way.

Patrick Aivazian said that the client “wanted a memorial that ‘stood out’ from the crowd and one that would best exemplify the deceased character and temperament. In this case the deceased was a much-loved local man who was known for his humour and song making, and of course his favourite drink. This is a unique memorial at our cemetery, and we feel that is an appropriate tribute that does not overwhelm other memorials in the vicinity.”

Henry Wilson Memorial Masons was established in 1817 as a local masonry in Uxbridge. The company specialises in supplying now Lawn and Full memorials, refurbishing existing memorials and carrying out additional inscriptions.

Patrick has been awarded £1,000, courtesy of Brent Stevenson Memorials.

Congratulations were also extended to Runner Up, Simon Richmond of Joseph Richmond and Son in Newcastle Upon Tyne and 3rd Place Winner, Simon Morgan of MOSSFORDS in Cardiff.
